Christmas time is almost here but it’s never too late to give your living space a fresh Christmas look! Do you have a preference in color for decorating your space for Christmas and New Year? Some people like red. Some green. Others prefer white. What is your favorite color? Or do you change every year depending on your mood or the current trend? If you are looking to change things up this year or add a little pizzazz to your holiday decor, take a look at my “9 Colorful Decorating Ideas for the Holidays!” for some inspiration.

Decorating a Home with Small Children

I love decorating for the Holidays, but as a mom of four young children, I have a tight budget and I have time constraints. There is also the issue of curiosity and little hands that need to touch and feel everything. So, most of the decorating ideas and suggestions I posted below are budget-friendly, quick and easy, and kid-friendly (or can be placed high enough where the little ones can’t reach)!

Idea 1: Festive Red

Very few colors say “Happy Holidays” like red. From Santa’s suit to Rudolph’s red nose, red is synonymous with Christmas. Red is often used to represent love, courage and romance, other popular holiday themes.

Idea 2: Forest Green

I am reminded of the smell of a pine tree and childhood memories of opening presents around the Christmas tree when I see the color green. Green often symbolizes money, good luck and health through the holidays and into the new year.

Idea 3: Snow White

Bing Crosby’s melody “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” comes to mind when I see the color white during the holidays. White has long been associated with peace and innocence in many cultures and religious traditions.

Idea 4: Chocolate Brown

Chocolate candies in the children’s stockings are synonymous with the holiday season. Chocolate cake is delightful. Why not spread the delightful feeling around the house with some chocolate brown decor? The color brown often evokes feelings of comfort, warmth, and security.

Idea 5: Glittery Gold

The three Wise Men came bearing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Thus, the color gold has been tied to Christmas and the Holiday Season for centuries. Gold is the color of prosperity and abundance.

Idea 6: Shiney Silver

How is silver related to Christmas? Tradition says it represents the sparkling start that the Magi (also known as the Three Kings or the Wise Men) followed. For us, it adds some sparkle and pizzazz to our holiday decor. The color silver symbolizes wealth and success and also represents sophistication, elegance, and glamour.

Idea 7: Royal Blue

Mary, the mother of Jesus, is most often pictured wearing blue. Unlike modern times where the color blue is a staple in nearly everyone’s wardrobe, in the past, the blue dye or paint was more expensive than gold and therefore only worn by royalty and the super-wealthy. The color blue evokes feelings of peacefulness, tranquility, security, and order.

Idea 8: Majestic Purple

Purple is the color of Epiphany, also known as the 12th Day of Christmas when the Magi finally visit with Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Similar to the color blue, purple has also been historically associated with royalty. In addition to royalty, purple is associated with wisdom, creativity, and luxury.

Idea 9: Pretty in Pink

While not a traditional holiday color, I have three daughters, so the color pink is abundant in our home all year. There is a tradition in some churches to light the Shepherd’s Candle, which is pink, on the 3rd Sunday of Advent. The light pink color symbolizes innocence, peace, and tranquility.

Conclusion

Thank you for reviewing my “9 Colorful Decorating Ideas for the Holidays!” post. I hope you have found some inspiration for your holiday decorating this year!
